Mahama Warns the World: ‘Unilateralism Is Breaking Our Global System!

President John Dramani Mahama has made a reaffirmation of Ghana’s commitment to multilateral collaboration in order to solve problems that impact the whole world, with a specific emphasis on climate change. The comments were made on the day when Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, came to see him in Accra, a visit that took place on Tuesday, November 25th. President Mahama stressed that there is no way for a single country to handle the problem of climate change by itself since it poses a danger to the whole world.”In particular, when we are confronted with difficulties such as the climate issue, we are of the opinion that multilateralism is the most suitable arrangement for our globe. The catastrophe that the climate is facing has an impact on every corner of the planet, and there is not a single nation that can adjust to it or discover a way to solve it. He went on to say, “Therefore, the only way that we are able to deal with the crisis that is the climate is to deal with it in a multilateral manner, and I would like to offer my congratulations to the United Kingdom for its leadership in the areas of climate change and climate resilience.” The President issued a warning that recent events on the world stage, which were instigated by unilateral measures, might potentially jeopardize the global order that has contributed to the preservation of stability for decades. He pointed out that events such as the invasion of Ukraine, the escalation of hostilities in a number of different countries, and the disastrous impact of the situation in Gaza “don’t belong to the 21st century.” Mahama emphasized his belief by stating, “I am convinced that unilateral action is not conducive to the global order.” He also criticized the fact that the rules-based global economic system is being eroded, noting that more and more nations are implementing tariffs without consultation. He said, “It is upending the rules-based trading system that we all have nurtured for years.” When confronted with the difficulties that these problems posed, Mahama issued a call for the establishment of “coalitions of the willing” in order to protect both the stability and the collaboration of the world at large. In addition, he said that the United Kingdom continues to be one of the most important partners to Ghana in this endeavor.
