Supreme Court Halts Kpandai Rerun: Experts Praise Move to Avoid Legal Chaos

Professor John Osae-Kwapong, a Democracy and Development Fellow at CDD-Ghana, has praised the Supreme Court’s decision to tell the Electoral Commission to put the Kpandai parliamentary rerun on hold, calling it a wise move to prevent legal and procedural problems. On JoyNews’ AM Show, he explained that the constitutional issues at stake justified the court stepping in and welcomed the pause until all legal matters are settled. He warned that letting the EC go ahead while the case is unresolved could cause major problems if the Supreme Court later overturns the High Court’s ruling, since some actions are hard to undo. The order comes after NPP candidate Matthew Nyindam challenged the Tamale High Court’s annulment of the December 7, 2024, election and its instruction for a rerun. Professor Osae-Kwapong said the court’s cautious approach will help avoid confusion while the legal questions about the EC’s role are being decided.
