20 girls sent home for drugs, NACOC warns substance abuse is spreading through SHS and tertiary institutions.

The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has raised concerns over the increasing prevalence of drug-related activities in both second-cycle and tertiary institutions, warning that substance abuse among students is becoming a major challenge.

According to the Commission, intelligence gathered through recent operations indicates that the use and distribution of illicit drugs are becoming more widespread within educational institutions, exposing students to narcotics and other harmful substances. NACOC believes this trend reflects a broader national drug abuse problem that requires urgent attention.

Speaking on Channel One TV, NACOC’s Head of Public Relations, Francis Amoah, revealed that even senior high schools are not immune to the growing menace. He disclosed that reports presented at a recent meeting highlighted a troubling case involving a girls’ school in Ghana, where 20 students were reportedly sent home for drug-related offences.

“We were informed at a meeting that there is a girls’ school in Ghana where 20 students have been asked to go home because of drugs,” Mr. Amoah stated.

He stressed the need for intensified awareness campaigns, stronger preventive measures, and closer collaboration among stakeholders to address substance abuse and protect the well-being of students across the country.
