8,500 laptops, 158 centres, zero fees, One Million Coders Programme puts devices in trainees’ hands, not just on paper.

To increase access to digital skills training, the Government has distributed 8,500 laptops to training centres across the country under the One Million Coders Programme. “The devices are meant for accredited centres not for individual participants and all the 158 participating centres have already been equipped,” said Fred Yeboah, Director of Research and Innovation at GI-KACE and a member of the programme’s implementation committee. The laptops are for trainees who do not own personal devices and the internet connectivity is also being provided for their learning, he said. The initiative is part of the government’s One Million Coders Programme which aims at training Ghanaians in technology related fields using both online and in-person learning models, with some courses being self-paced and others being centre-based. He also announced the selection of 16 regional centres to pilot face-to-face training with dedicated instructors, as the programme continues to ramp up efforts to bridge the digital skills gap and improve youth employability.
