STANDING ORDERS DON’T FEAR TITLES — Fuseini Reminds MPs as Tensions Explode in Parliament
Inusah Fuseini, a former MP from Tamale Central, has given all current MPs a strong warning. He said that every MP has to be careful about what they do because whatever they do in Parliament has implications. Speaker Alban Bagbin sent Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to the Privileges Committee for allegedly disrespecting Parliament. This was after Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga filed a petition saying Afenyo-Markin shouldn’t have been left out of Ghana’s ECOWAS mission. Fuseini said on Citi Eyewitness News on Thursday, November 27, that MPs need to follow the regulations and the Standing Orders to avoid doing anything that might get them in trouble. He said, “It doesn’t matter if you’re the Majority Leader or the Minority Leader.” The most crucial thing is that the behavior does not break any of the Standing Orders. Fuseini also said that Afenyo-Markin may be kicked out of the party if he broke the rules. He stressed that no MP, no matter how high up they are, is safe from punishment under Article 97. His words show how tensions are rising in Parliament as lawmakers wait for the Privileges Committee to decide what to do next.
