Even though the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) has expressed its opinion that the action might result in the squandering of public resources and a breach of petroleum sector regulations, Dr. Yussif Sulemana, who serves as the Technical Advisor at the Ministry of Energy, has encouraged civil society to have confidence in the government’s strategy for acquiring Springfield Exploration’s share in the West Cape Three Points Block 2 oil field. He said that the government would only continue with the plan if impartial specialists were able to confirm the potential of the field and that they would abandon the plan if it were not in the nation’s best interest. Dr. Sulemana observed that the field has been partly “derisked” and that it might potentially store over 1.5 billion barrels of oil and more than a trillion cubic feet of gas, which would provide a tremendous advantage to Ghana if proved viable.
