Ghana Card Becomes Mandatory for All Insurance Transactions from 2026

Starting next year, 1st January, 2026, presenting a valid Ghana Card will become a mandatory requirement for anyone looking to purchase or renew motor or other insurance products in Ghana, according to an announcement by the National Insurance Commission (NIC). For corporate clients, providing a TIN (Tax Number) will also be necessary when engaging in a other insurance transaction as the (motor insurance). The NIC clarified that this new rule is designed to make insurance claims processing faster and more efficient, while also strengthening compliance with Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) regulations. In addition, the move is aimed at reducing fraudulent activities in the insurance sector and aligning Ghana’s industry practices with international financial standards. This development mirrors similar measures recently introduced by the Bank of Ghana for deposits and other financial services, highlighting the growing importance of the Ghana Card as a key tool for conducting almost all formal insurance transactions in the country.
