Ghana, US Partner on Cybercrime and Extraditions
The President of the United States of America has praised John Dramani Mahama’s government for working closely with them to fight cybercrime, highlighting Ghana’s important role in helping extradite nine people who are facing US charges for online fraud and impersonation. Speaking at a roundtable at the US Embassy in Accra on December 12, 2025, US Chargé d’Affaires Rolf Olson specifically commended Ghana’s Attorney-General’s Department and Ministry of the Interior for following the law and doing their part in these cases, reminding everyone that the people who were extradited are still considered innocent until proven guilty in court, and if found guilty, they could face prison sentences. Mr. Rolf Olson stressed how important it is to hold people accountable, especially when the crimes they commit is targeted unto vulnerable victims, and made it clear that the US remains open to making extradition requests and working with Ghana’s courts when needed. On the issue of migration, Olson said the US continues to focus on enforcing its immigration laws, including deportations, and praised Ghana for cooperating by welcoming back its nationals who are returning, noting that this strong cooperation reflects the positive and close relationship between the US and Ghana.
