Ghana Armed Forces Dismiss Claims of $300 Daily UN Pay for Peacekeepers
The Ghana Armed Forces has come out against rumors that the United Nations pays Ghanaian peacekeepers $300 a day. They believe these accusations are untrue and meant to make soldiers unhappy. Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, the Acting Director-General of Public Relations, spoke at a press conference in Accra and said that the UN pays each soldier’s country about $46 per day. Of that, $35 goes directly to the soldier and $11 is used for welfare, training, logistics, and other mission-related needs like pre-deployment training, holiday support, morale-boosting activities, and regular welfare visits. She said that these numbers are available to the public and told the media to always check their facts before reporting them. This is to protect national security and not to weaken the military. Captain Arhin also said that the Armed Forces are having trouble finding places to live because they have been in service for longer and are hiring more people. However, he said that plans are in place to start building 700 new housing blocks next year and finish housing projects that have been put on hold. He also asked the public to support and unite with the military to help make the Armed Forces stronger.
