Minister Pledges Funding, Recruitment, and Salary Support for Health Workers in 2026
The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced that the Ministry has been allocated GH¢22.8 billion in the 2026 Budget to improve healthcare delivery and strengthen Ghana’s health system, with funds earmarked for upgrading health infrastructure, expanding Free Primary Healthcare, increasing support for the NHIS, recruiting more health workers and improving salaries and welfare to curb the migration of professionals. Speaking at the 6th Annual National Dinner and Awards Night of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association in Accra on December 13, 2025, he reaffirmed government’s commitment to continuous engagement with nurses and midwives, praised them as the backbone of healthcare delivery, disclosed that 13,500 nurses and midwives have been recruited, and assured that outstanding salary arrears would be cleared before year-end, in line with initiatives such as Free Primary Healthcare and the Mahama Cares programme. The Okyenhene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, also commended nurses and midwives for their dedication and urged government to invest in modern health facilities to complement the work of healthcare professionals and position Ghana as a healthcare hub.
