Historic Ghana National Theatre Set for Major Renovation to Modernize Facilities

The Ghana National Theatre is set to undergo major renovations to modernize its facilities, improve safety, and create a better environment for both performers and audiences. After more than 30 years of hosting concerts, drama, dance, and other cultural events, the theatre is facing infrastructural and technical challenges that the refurbishment aims to address. A Chinese delegation, following President Mahama’s recent visit to China, has committed $30 million (¥200 million yuan) to support the project, with priority given to urgent areas such as halls, stages, storage spaces, air-conditioning, and safety systems including fencing, CCTV, and firefighting equipment. Built in 1992, the theatre is home to the National Dance Company, National Symphony Orchestra, and National Drama Company, and has long served as a central platform for nurturing talent, promoting cultural exchange, and advancing Ghana’s arts and creative industry on both national and international stages.
