GFA Opens Door for Abu Francis’ Black Stars Comeback
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has indicated that it has not completely dismissed the prospect of the injured midfielder, Abu Francis, making a comeback into the Black Stars lineup for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following encouraging signs in his rehabilitation process. The 24-year-old Footballer has shown notable improvement, resuming gym-based activities less than a month after sustaining a severe injury during the November international window. He suffered a two-bone fracture after an unfortunate twist while trying to block a shot in a friendly loss against Japan. Francis later underwent a successful surgical procedure at Toyota Memorial Hospital, and according to GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum, the outcome has been positive, largely due to the expertise of a highly skilled young Japanese surgeon who expressed confidence in the player’s swift recovery. His French club, Toulouse FC, had earlier suggested that the injury could rule him out of the 2026 World Cup. Francis’ early return to conditioning work has renewed hope that he could still be in contention. Twum emphasized that the association will remain patient and monitor Francis’ progress until he regains full fitness to resume on-field training. He also mentioned that Black Stars’ head coach Otto Addo has until June 1 2026, to submit Ghana’s final World Cup squad.
