Parliament Greenlights New Six-Lane Accra–Kumasi Expressway
Parliament has approved a concession agreement between the Ministry of Roads and Highways and Accra–Kumasi Expressway Limited to facilitate the construction of a new six‑lane expressway linking Accra and Kumasi, part of efforts to address public concern over the deteriorating condition of the existing highway plagued by potholes, uneven surfaces and poor lighting; Roads Minister Governs Agbodza assured lawmakers that the expressway is designed to serve as a high‑standard alternative route rather than replace the current road and noted that tolling will be implemented in accordance with ECOWAS and African Union protocols that require a free alternative route for motorists, while MPs including Kojo Oppong Nkrumah urged that the ongoing maintenance and completion of the existing highway, especially lighting and unfinished segments, be prioritised so it is not neglected as the new project advances; government officials emphasised that the scheme will modernise one of Ghana’s key transport arteries, improve safety, shorten travel times and offer commuters and commercial vehicles a faster and more efficient option between the two cities.
