Rev. Fordjour Demands Answers on Unauthorized Troop Movements

Parliament’s Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has slammed the government’s decision to send Ghanaian troops to Jamaica and Benin without first securing approval from Parliament, demanding immediate explanations from the Defence Minister and other relevant security agencies, and arguing that the executive sidestepped constitutional and oversight processes by not allowing lawmakers to scrutinise the costs, legal frameworks, duration and safety implications of the foreign deployments; he said while the Minority does not oppose Ghana’s tradition of offering assistance to friendly nations, such decisions should have been brought before the House to enable proper parliamentary oversight, and contrasted this with past instances such as military helicopter procurements where parliamentary consultation was required, noting that withholding such information denies Ghanaians the opportunity to question how public resources are used and raising concerns that domestic security needs and priorities may be overlooked amid these unapproved troop movements.
