Tinubu storms to APC ticket with 11m votes, Nigeria’s president eyes second term as reforms win over investors.
President Bola Tinubu will seek a second and final four-year term in January after overwhelmingly defeating challenger Stanley Osifo in the presidential primaries of Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress on May 24. Tinubu secured nearly 11 million votes against Osifo’s 16,500, strengthening his position ahead of the election. The Nigerian leader has received praise from foreign investors for implementing major economic reforms, including the removal of fuel and electricity subsidies, the ending of foreign exchange controls and changes to the tax system. His re-election prospects were further boosted after efforts by opposition parties to field a single candidate collapsed earlier this month. Tinubu assumed office in 2023 after defeating his two main rivals in an election whose results were unsuccessfully challenged in court over allegations of rigging, claims he denied, insisting he won fairly.
