Accra-Kumasi highway takes farms, homes, contractors assure: compensation coming in June, complaints committee set up.
Military contractors working on the new Accra-Kumasi Expressway have assured affected residents and farmers that the government will provide adequate compensation for properties and farms destroyed to make way for the project. Speaking during an engagement with more than 200 aggrieved farmers at Akyem Asene near Oda, Major Evans Biney said the road corridor had been expanded from 120 to 150 metres, increasing the number of affected properties, including buildings, cocoa farms, oil palm plantations and food crop farms. He explained that officials from the Land Valuation Board and the Ghana Highways Authority would soon assess unvalued properties for compensation, which the GHA said would be paid in June 2026. The contractors also denied allegations of intimidation by soldiers and stated that no final decision had been made on rumours about an interchange at Asene New Town that could affect homes, the Akim State University College and a public cemetery. Major Biney further disclosed that a complaints committee would be established to address grievances from affected residents as feasibility studies on the project continue.
