Accra drowning in waste, 4,400 tonnes daily, set to hit 5,100 by 2036, minister warns of urgent need for new plants.

The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has cautioned that Greater Accra will require additional waste disposal and treatment facilities to manage the steadily rising volume of municipal waste. Speaking at a stakeholders’ dialogue on sustainable solid waste management in Accra, the Minister disclosed that the 25 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies within the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area currently generate about 4,400 tonnes of waste daily, translating to approximately 1.6 million tonnes annually. He further warned that waste generation is projected to exceed 5,100 tonnes per day by 2036, underscoring the urgent need for investment in modern disposal and treatment infrastructure.
