Child prostitution rising in Somanya, NCCE calls for urgent action as gender-based violence fuels abuse.

Henrietta Glikpo, Director of the Yilo Krobo Municipal Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has expressed concern over the increasing incidence of child prostitution in Somanya and other communities within the municipality.

She raised the issue during a one-day sensitization programme on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) held in Somanya in the Eastern Region. The programme brought together a broad range of stakeholders, including residents, women’s fellowship groups, personnel from the Ghana Police Service, the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), the Department of Social Welfare, health professionals, and other community leaders to discuss strategies for addressing gender-based violence in the municipality.

According to Ms. Glikpo, the rising prevalence of gender-based violence has significantly contributed to child neglect, abuse, and other social challenges, including the growing problem of child prostitution. She emphasized the need for collaborative efforts among stakeholders to tackle these issues and safeguard the welfare and rights of children in the municipality.
