Adamus Resources loses three mining leases, government says unlawful mining, foreign galamsey, and environmental ruin triggered the axe.
The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources has revoked the mining leases of Adamus Resources Limited’s Akango, Salman and Nkroful following investigations by the Minerals Commission which uncovered a number of breaches of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703) and regulations. The findings showed illegal subcontracting without ministerial approval, mining without valid permits or approved plans and failure to obtain necessary clearances from agencies including the Environmental Protection Authority and the involvement of foreign nationals in illegal mining activities popularly referred to as galamsey. The company also was cited for substandard mining, working outside designated areas and causing major environmental damage. The revocation, carried out under Section 100(2) of Act 703, was in the public interest and could be followed by criminal proceedings against the company and its leadership. The government has also promised to support workers affected by the move and reiterated its commitment to protecting the country’s natural resources.
