Education Minister Urges Striking University Staff: Show Goodwill, Return to Work
The Minister of Education has publicly asked striking members of the Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (USSAG) and the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) to go back to work. He framed the request as a call for goodwill on both sides in response to the government’s promise to protect academic freedom. At the submission ceremony for the transition committee report on the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC), the Minister admitted that staff complaints about unpaid Tier 2 pension contributions were valid. He said that a partial payment of 396 million Ghana cedis had been made, leaving about 600 million cedis still owed. The appeal comes at a time when public universities are still having problems with teaching and administration because of strikes over late pension payments and other working conditions.
