Egyapa Mercer: Bawumia’s Popularity Still Strong (Primary Win Shows Delegate Confidence)
Andrew Egyapa Mercer, a former MP and Minister from Sekondi, says that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is still very popular in the NPP after his victory in the presidential primary on January 31. He dismisses claims that a drop in votes from 2023 means that support is waning. Mercer said on Metro TV on February 3 that the result was expected because delegates trusted Bawumia and the data clearly showed that he would win. He said that the difference in votes was because the 2026 primary was more competitive than the 2023 two-horse race, with Dr. Bryan Acheampong coming in as a strong candidate. He also said that Bawumia’s performance shows that delegates still trust him to lead the party in the 2028 general elections.
