GH¢17 million in vehicles, GH¢4.2 million in sole-sourced contracts, MP Assafuah demands answers: where’s the value, where’s the transparency?
Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, is worried that the National Pensions Regulatory Authority is relying too much on sole sourcing. He says this could hurt transparency and value for money. He talked on Adom FM about high-value purchases, like a GH¢4.2 million consulting contract and a vehicle purchase that cost more than GH¢17 million and $160,000. He said that using sole sourcing too often suggests that the proper procedures weren’t followed. He also questioned the need for expensive consulting services, which were said to cost about GH¢175,000 a month, and pointed out inconsistencies in the Authority’s statements about buying vehicles, especially Land Cruisers. Mr. Assafuah said that records show that these kinds of vehicles were bought recently, which he called a concern for accountability. He said that while sole sourcing is legal in some situations, there needs to be more openness and scrutiny to keep the public’s trust in how pension funds are managed.
