GTEC Orders UG to Reverse 25% Fee Hike—Refunds, Suspension of New Dues Demanded!
The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has told the University of Ghana to immediately undo any recent fee increases and dues for the 2025/2026 academic year. This is because there were reports of a 25% rise and new charges being added without Parliament’s approval. GTEC wrote a letter on January 5, 2026, telling the university to give continuing students credit for overpayments, refund final-year students who paid too much, bring all fees back to last year’s rates, and put a stop to any new fees like the 75th Anniversary dues and Development Levy. The Commission made it clear that public universities can’t change student fees without following the law, which includes getting approval from Parliament under the Fees and Charges Act. The University of Ghana has until January 12, 2026, to prove that it is following the rules. If it doesn’t, it will face serious penalties from the government.
