Haruna Iddrisu, Minister of Education, has urged the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) and the Technical Universities Senior Administrators Association of Ghana (TUSAAG) to call off their strike while negotiations continue, expressing hope that all public universities would reopen by October 18, 2026. He said the government was addressing their concerns, including the payment of a one-off research allowance and a negotiated 40 per cent adjustment to market premium and non-basic allowances. He also indicated that outstanding remuneration issues had been referred to the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC).

The strike has disrupted university reopening preparations, student registration, accommodation allocation and other administrative services. TUSAAG President Stanley Akamiragopam cited delays in paying the research allowance and concerns over disparities in how salary adjustments were calculated for administrators and university teaching staff. Augustine Amissere, President of GAUA at the University of Ghana, also reported that essential campus operations had been affected. Mr Iddrisu urged the unions to consult their members and suspend the industrial action as the government works to resolve their grievances.
