HIV Drugs Could Finish in Months — GAC Warns: ‘We’re Running on Empty!

The Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) has issued an appeal to the government, urging them to resupply antiretroviral (ARV) medications. The commission has expressed concern that supplies may run out by May 2026, which might lead to setbacks in viral suppression and treatment resistance. Derick Oppong-Agyare, who is the Deputy Director, said that decreases in financing, particularly from the United States to the Global Fund, have interfered with programs for HIV, even if the government is working on a strategy for funding to enhance treatment. In addition, Ghana intends to submit a new application for Lenacapavir, an injectable medicine that is administered twice a year to prevent HIV. World AIDS Day, which this year has the subject “Overcoming disruption, transforming the AIDS response,” is a day that aims to increase awareness of and provide assistance to those who are living with HIV. The call was made on this day. In addition to providing Ghana with a venue for sharing ideas and strengthening its response to HIV, hosting the 2025 International Conference on AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections (ICASA) in Accra would be beneficial.
