KT Hammond: 24-Hour Economy Needs Clarity (More Than Just Round-the-Clock Trading)
Kobina Tahiru Hammond, who used to be Ghana’s Minister for Trade and Industry, has said that the proposed 24-hour economy policy may not be practical, especially when it comes to trade. He said on Adom FM’s “Dwaso Nsem” that the idea is still not clear and could be misinterpreted. He also said that working 24 hours a day does not automatically lead to economic growth without clear rules. He wondered if the policy was meant to include informal traders like market women at Makola and if they were expected to work all the time, since labor laws say they can’t work more than a certain number of hours. Mr. Hammond said that the policy would be more useful if factories and big industries that work in shifts to make more goods and hire more people were behind it. He said that only then would a 24-hour economy make sense.
