President John Dramani Mahama has announced the termination of the 22-year-old Police Hospital expansion contract, citing prolonged disagreements with the contractor and cost overruns. Speaking at the commissioning of a new 85-bed ward at the hospital, he said the government would take responsibility for completing the project, with approximately GH¢200 million to be provided in the 2027 Budget. He directed the Minister for Finance to make the allocation to ensure the expanded facility becomes operational before the end of 2027. The President also announced the donation of two new ambulances to strengthen the hospital’s emergency response services.

The expansion is expected to add 106 beds, taking the hospital’s total capacity to more than 300. Planned facilities include a 12-bed intensive care unit, a new accident and emergency centre, consulting rooms, three general surgical theatres, a specialised orthopaedic theatre, an endoscopy unit and MRI and CT scan equipment. The project will also include a mortuary with capacity for 222 bodies. The government says completing the expansion will improve healthcare infrastructure and increase access to specialised treatment for police personnel and other patients.
