Man United Sack Amorim After Leeds Draw—Fletcher Named Interim Boss Amid Turmoil

Manchester United has fired manager Ruben Amorim because he and club officials, especially director of football Jason Wilcox, could no longer get along. He left soon after the 1–1 draw with Leeds United on Sunday, which was his last game in charge.

Amorim took over for Erik ten Hag in November 2024. United is now in sixth place in the Premier League after winning eight of their 20 league games this season. Tensions behind the scenes at Old Trafford grew more and more during his time there, mostly because he was frustrated by the lack of transfer activity in January and because he openly criticized the club’s leadership.

The Portuguese coach won 24 of the 63 games he coached, but he couldn’t get the team to play consistently, even though people had high hopes for him after his successful time at Sporting Lisbon. United’s form was around the middle of the table, and there were times when they were worried about being relegated, which made his job even harder.

Amorim’s departure shows that things are still unstable at Old Trafford. Darren Fletcher, a former United midfielder and current Under-18s coach, has been named interim manager until Wednesday’s game against Burnley. The club is now looking for a permanent replacement. As rumors grow, United is under more and more pressure to stabilize the club, get back to being consistently competitive, and revive their hopes of playing in Europe.
