Chelsea is in fifth place in the Premier League table, 15 points behind leaders Arsenal. The Italian leaves after a tough stretch in which the Blues won only one of their last seven league games. The club is now expected to act quickly, and a new head coach is likely to be announced in the next few days.
Chelsea confirmed the news by putting out a statement saying that both sides had agreed to go their separate ways.
“Chelsea Football Club and head coach Enzo Maresca have split up.”
Enzo led the team to victory in the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup while he was with the club. We thank him for his work with the club, and those accomplishments will always be a big part of the club’s recent history.
Enzo and the club think that a change is the best way for the team to get the season back on track, since they still have important goals to reach in four competitions, including qualifying for the Champions League.
We hope the best for Enzo in the future.
Maresca’s last game as coach was a 2-2 draw against Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night. After the game, Chelsea’s manager didn’t go to the press conference, and reports say he was sick, which led to more rumors of tension behind the scenes.
On Sunday, Chelsea will play Manchester City, starting a busy January schedule that includes nine games in four different competitions.
In June 2024, Chelsea hired Maresca as their new head coach. He had a great run with Leicester City, where he led the Foxes to the Championship title in the 2023–24 season.
During his time at Chelsea, things started off well. The team won four of their first six Premier League games with him in charge. The team also ended that season on a high note, winning five of their last six league games to finish in fourth place and qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
Maresca’s time in charge brought home trophies, even though things have been hard lately. In May 2025, Chelsea won the UEFA Conference League by beating Real Betis 4-1. Two months later, the Blues won the FIFA Club World Cup by beating Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain 3-0.
Maresca’s time at Stamford Bridge will end with some big wins, even though the club is now looking forward to a new chapter.
