Metro Mass must stand on its own, Nikpe says 100 new buses are a start, not a bailout.

Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe has urged Metro Mass Transit to strengthen its internal systems and improve operational efficiency so it can expand its fleet without heavy reliance on government support. Speaking at the commissioning of 100 new buses at the company’s head office, he said the acquisition should be the start of a wider transformation, not an end point, and called for better staff welfare and stronger internal structures to support future growth. He cautioned against long-term dependence on government or external partners, stressing the goal of building a self-sustaining public transport system capable of expanding within two to three years, while assuring continued government support to address institutional gaps and improve implementation. Mr Nikpe also commended transport workers for their commitment and reaffirmed government’s commitment to developing a reliable national transport network to support economic activity.
