NDC’S INSTITUTIONAL ASSAULT:  HARASSMENT OF MINORITY LEADER IS A DAWN OF DEMOCRATIC WEAKENING!

Ghana cannot stand idle while the very foundations of its democracy are under attack. The sustained harassment of Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo‑Markin is a direct assault on parliamentary integrity and the role of opposition in this republic. Attempts to remove him from the ECOWAS Parliament, coupled with repeated referrals to the Privileges Committee over legitimate criticism, are blatant acts of intimidation aimed at weakening the opposition.

This is a dangerous precedent. A democracy that punishes dissent and criticizes legitimate opposition is a democracy on the path to authoritarian comfort. It is unacceptable, it is reckless, and it cannot be tolerated. The NDC’s actions are calculated to silence critical voices, suppress debate, and manipulate parliamentary processes to favor partisan interests over national interest.

We condemn in the strongest possible terms the targeting of a leader who is performing his constitutional role. These procedural attacks are not just an attack on one individual; they are an attack on every Ghanaian’s right to a government that is held accountable. The Minority Leader’s rights, and by extension the rights of all parliamentarians who dare speak truth to power, must be defended vigorously.

Ghana must resist any form of political intimidation. The NPP stands in defending the principles of freedom of expression, parliamentary independence, and institutional integrity. We will not allow political harassment to become the norm. The nation cannot be led into a system where criticism invites punishment, and debate is replaced by fear.

These attacks are a national emergency for democracy. The Minority Leader must be allowed to carry out his duties without obstruction or threats. Ghana’s institutions must be strengthened, not weakened, and the opposition must be empowered to perform its constitutional duty without fear.

Let it be clear: the NPP rejects, condemns, and warns against these actions. Democracy is not negotiable. Any assault on the opposition is an assault on every citizen, on every democratic right, and on Ghana’s future. Ghana deserves leaders who respect institutions, not leaders who manipulate them to silence accountability.

The harassment ends now. Ghana’s democracy will not be compromised. The opposition will not be silenced. The Constitution and the people’s voice will always prevail.
