NPP Elections Committee Dismisses Claims of Disenfranchisement; Says Only Members Who Broke Party Rules Are Barred From 2026 Primaries

No qualified party member has been excluded from the impending 2026 presidential primaries, according to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Presidential Elections Committee. Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Saturday, November 22, Committee Secretary William Yamoah denied allegations of intentional disenfranchisement, emphasizing that the only people who are prohibited from voting are those who have renounced their membership in accordance with the party’s constitution. “Any member who publicly supports a rival party or independent candidate, or runs as an independent against an officially sponsored NPP candidate, immediately loses their membership,” Yamoah said, citing Article 3(9) of the NPP constitution. Rejecting claims that the Committee is barring delegates from participating in the primaries, he emphasized that such individuals—and only such individuals—are removed from the voting process. The explanation comes after the USA chapter of the NPP filed a petition asking the National Executive Committee of the party to reevaluate the prohibition on proxy voting in the 2026 presidential primary. Yaa Frimpomaa Amponsah, the chairperson of the NPP USA, said that proxy voting is a legitimate feature under Ghana’s election laws, notwithstanding the Elections Committee’s directive that all delegates must be physically present on voting day to maintain transparency. She cautioned that members who would not be able to travel might lose their rights as a result of the prohibition.
