Political Feuds Are Tearing Ghana Apart, Says Oquaye

Former Speaker of Parliament Professor Mike Oquaye has said that rising political disagreements in Ghana are weakening the country’s sense of togetherness and making people less confident that laws will be applied fairly. Speaking on Channel One TV on Monday, December 15, he said the country has become too split along party lines and urged a deliberate effort to bridge these divides and rebuild unity. He pointed out that many issues that should be treated as legal matters are instead turned into political fights, which he said is harmful to democracy and undermines justice and accountability. Prof. Oquaye emphasized that experienced leaders who understand the consequences of such divisions need to take the lead in addressing the problem, adding that Ghana cannot continue on its current path. He also observed that even activities like football, which once brought people together, no longer unite Ghanaians, highlighting how deep the divisions have become, and called for a more inclusive political system to prevent exclusion, frustration, and further weakening of national cohesion.
