PURC Calls Emergency Meeting (Seeks Answers as Prepaid Tariff Hike Drains Units Fast)

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has called an emergency meeting with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) after many news reports and complaints from the public about how quickly prepaid electricity units are running out after the recent tariff change under the Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO). The Commission wrote a letter on February 25, 2026, saying that they were worried about the issue’s effects on regulation, technology, and consumer protection, as well as its possible effects on public trust in metering and vending systems. The meeting will take place on February 26, 2026, at the PURC GNAT Office in Accra. It will focus on a full technical briefing on how to put the new tariff into place in the prepaid vending and metering system. This will include a review of system parameters, configuration or conversion logic changes related to the MYTO adjustment. ECG is also expected to share information about vending trends, meter update protocols, the types of complaints consumers are making, and the steps being taken to resolve them. They will also suggest immediate technical and communication measures to protect consumer trust and make sure that all rules are followed.
