Ramaphosa Deploys 2,200 Troops (SA Targets Crime, Illegal Mining in Five Provinces)
President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa has ordered 2,200 members of the South African National Defence Force to help fight crime in five provinces: the Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, North West, and Western Cape. The troops will help the South African Police Service stop and fight crime, especially illegal mining and gang violence. The deployment, which is expected to cost around 823 million rand ($49 million), will take place from March 1, 2026, to March 31, 2027.
