Special Prosecutor Probes GH¢25.8m Palm Oil Diversion (Customs, Security Officers Implicated)

The Office of the Special Prosecutor is looking into the possible illegal sale of 50 twenty-foot containers of palm oil worth GH¢25.8 million on the local market without paying taxes and duties. On February 24, 2026, the Office said in a statement that the goods were supposed to be transit cargo to Burkina Faso but were allegedly sold in Ghana, which cost the government about GH¢10.5 million in lost revenue. Early results show that some Customs officers, National Security agents, and clearing agents were part of a coordinated plan. The investigation comes after an intelligence-led operation in November 2025, and it is still going on to find out what each person’s role was and whether they could be charged with a crime. There are bigger worries about the abuse of Ghana’s transit trade system, which lets goods go through the country without paying taxes. Recent seizures by security agencies and the Ghana Revenue Authority found that some shipments were going to the wrong place and that there were problems with declarations. The Ministry of Finance has limited the land transport of cooking oil in response, requiring it to go through certain seaports for better monitoring.
