Teachers with no pay, no posts, no homes, Bekwai MP says Ghana’s education crisis is hitting on all fronts.
Ralph Poku-Adusei, a member of parliament for Bekwai, says that Ghana’s education system is in crisis on many levels, with problems affecting teachers, important programs, and the sector as a whole. During the handover of a renovated and retooled Queen Elizabeth II Day Nursery School in Bekwai, he criticized the government for taking too long to hire teachers, not paying them on time, and not keeping their promise to automatically place trained teachers. He said that some teachers who worked for months have only received one month’s pay, while others are still at home without jobs, housing, or income. He also talked about the problems that flagship programs like the School Feeding Program and Free SHS are having and said that something needs to be done right away to protect the future of education. Leticia Obeng, the Bekwai Municipal Education Director, praised the MP for the renovation project, calling it timely and impactful. She also said that the better infrastructure would make teaching and learning better and motivate both staff and students.
