Trust Crisis: Speaker Bagbin Urges Media Partnership to Rebuild Confidence in Parliament

Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament, has asked the media to work more closely with Parliament to rebuild trust in Ghana’s democratic institutions. He said that even though 73% of Ghanaians want democracy, only 49% are satisfied with it, and MPs and government agencies are still some of the least trusted groups in the country. Bagbin said that open communication between Parliament and the media is important to close the trust gap at the first Public Financial Management Media conversation in Accra on November 24, 2025. The theme of the conversation was “Parliament, The Press, and The Purse: Building Accountability through Dialogue.” Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, the Majority Chief Whip, called for tighter execution of the PFM Act, 2016’s accountability standards. John Darko, an NPP MP, stressed the importance of strong financial management and public participation to improve accountability and the ability to pay back debt. Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, Clerk to Parliament, pushed for issue-based reports, and the World Bank and FCDO, two foreign partners, stressed how important it was to work together to improve fiscal control, openness, and public trust.
