Walewale MP Urges Data Law Review (Warns of Rising Misuse in Digital Era)

Hon. Abdul Kabiru Tiah Mahama, a Member of Parliament from Walewale, has asked for a review of Ghana’s data protection laws. He says that in the digital age, it is becoming more common for people to misuse personal information. During Data Protection Week, he spoke in Parliament and said that talks at a recent conference showed how important it is to change the law to keep up with changes in technology and society. He praised Parliament for always including privacy protections since the Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843) was passed. He also pointed out that institutions, including Parliament itself, have registered their data systems with the Data Protection Commission to show that they are following the law. He was worried about how many people share personal information on social media without permission. He stressed that almost all businesses deal with sensitive data that needs to be kept safe to keep the public’s trust. The Data Protection Commission has warned that enforcement will be stronger in 2026, with fines and jail time for people who don’t follow the rules. This renewed focus on data protection is in line with Ghana’s digital transformation and other national efforts.
