Zaato slams political hypocrisy: ‘You can’t defend Kevin Taylor and jail Abronye, selective outrage is a threat to democracy.’
A senior lecturer at the University of Ghana, Joshua Jebuntie Zaato has condemned the double standards of political actors in responding to controversial public commentators. On May 18, he said on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana programme it was hypocritical to defend one commentator and condemn another based on political affiliation, citing political commentator Kevin Taylor and activist Kwame Baffoe as examples. Dr Zaato said provocative political commentary was a part of democratic discourse and warned that selective outrage and repeated escalation of speech-related disputes could threaten democratic stability. He called for more tolerance in political discourses, called for restraint in the exercise of power and said that the inability of the state to implement court orders and legal processes were factors that fed into public mistrust.
