CHOOSING A SCHOOL NO BE CONSENT TO BREAK THE CONSTITUTION! — EduWatch Boss Fires!
Kofi Asare, the Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, has said that parents’ right to pick a school cannot be more important than constitutionally protected rights. He also said on Joy News’ PM Express that schools must respect and safeguard religious freedom. He said that even though Muslim students have been able to pray in high schools for a long time, current discussions imply that these liberties may be in danger. He also made it clear that the main problem is the enjoyment of religious rights in mission schools. Mr. Asare talked about two important rules that protect religious rights: non-discrimination, which says that people can’t be treated differently because of their religion (this is guaranteed by Article 17 of the Constitution), and non-compulsion, which says that people can’t be forced to practice a different religion or stop practicing their own. He said that parents agree to a school’s religious rules when they choose it, but he said that these choices cannot override constitutional protections. He also said that forcing students to act against their faith is a violation of their basic rights and could lead to unfair treatment in some schools.
