Trump Admin Appeals Judge’s Limits on ICE Actions After Minneapolis Shooting

After tensions rose when an ICE agent shot and killed 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good, the Trump administration said it would appeal a federal judge’s decision that limits the actions of U.S. immigration agents in Minneapolis. The Department of Justice filed a short notice on Saturday saying that it was appealing an order from Friday that says federal officers can’t arrest, detain, or use pepper spray, tear gas, or other crowd-control weapons against peaceful protesters and observers unless there is a good reason to believe that they are breaking the law or getting in the way of law enforcement. Six protesters and observers filed a lawsuit on December 17 against the Department of Homeland Security and other agencies, claiming that their constitutional rights were violated. The case comes at a time when thousands of immigration agents are being sent to the Minneapolis area as part of a tougher deportation campaign. This has led to widespread protests since the shooting that killed a man.
