Agbodza Blames Suame Delays on Cathedral Spend (Says Redesign Will Still Modernize Kumasi Roads)
Governs Kwame Agbodza, the Minister for Roads and Highways, has criticized his predecessor, Francis Asenso-Boakye, for the delays in the Suame Interchange project, saying that the previous NPP government had the wrong priorities. He said that the more than $100 million spent on the National Cathedral could have paid for at least half of the interchange, which would have saved residents years of traffic jams and other problems. Mr. Agbodza defended the current redesign, which takes away the fourth-tier bridge. He said that new projects like the Kumasi Outer Ring Road under the Big Push Programme will ease traffic on Suame. He also talked about problems with expropriation and compensation that the previous government left behind. He said that the fourth-tier bridge would have hurt important businesses and made costs too high to handle. He told the Minority not to make the project political, stressing that the new design, along with other road work, will make Kumasi and the Ashanti Region’s road network more modern and efficient.
