Gov’t Vows Action on Illegal Mining Tax Scandal (‘No One Will Be Spared,’ Says Kwakye Ofosu)
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, has told Ghanaians that anyone found guilty of the alleged illegal mining taxation scheme shown in a JoyNews Hotline documentary will face the full force of the law, no matter who they are or what political party they belong to. He said on JoyNews’ “The Pulse” that the government will not protect people who do wrong, and he pointed to the ongoing prosecution of former Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi) as proof of this promise. His comments come after reports that government officials were allegedly taxing, receiving payments for, and protecting illegal mining activities in Amansie Central. Undercover recordings and documents suggest that there is an extortion network connected to the District Assembly and a taskforce led by the District Chief Executive. In the meantime, Sulemana Braimah, the Executive Director of MFWA, has called for the Amansie Central DCE to be fired right away because of what they found.
