Ghana Records 1,038 Mpox Cases, 8 Deaths (Vaccination Drives Down Weekly Infections)

According to Minister of Health Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Ghana had 1,038 confirmed Mpox cases and eight deaths as of March 3, 2026. Cases have been reported in 124 districts, with Greater Accra and the Western regions being the worst hit. However, the outbreak is getting better, with weekly cases dropping from 28 to seven after vaccination campaigns. Since the outbreak in May 2025, the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service, with help from partners, have carried out coordinated responses that include surveillance, contact tracing, laboratory testing, case management, community engagement, and reactive vaccination. These efforts have reached more than 31,000 people in 12 districts. The government is paying for all medical costs for people who are affected, and Mpox is no longer considered a public health emergency of international concern. In another update, the Minister said that Sandra Baafi Boateng, who was hurt during the Ghana Armed Forces recruitment exercise, would continue to get support. A specialist-led team will make sure that her treatment and rehabilitation are fully covered and coordinated, and she will have options for care both at home and abroad.
