ORAL cases need more hands, Martin Kpebu warns AG’s department is stretched thin, urges recruitment of retired prosecutors.

Private legal practitioner and member of the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) committee, Martin Kpebu, has called for increased staffing at the Attorney General’s Department to speed up the prosecution of ORAL-related cases. Speaking on Eyewitness News on June 11, he described progress on the cases as encouraging but warned that the large number of ongoing and anticipated cases could lead to delays if more prosecutors and investigators are not recruited. Kpebu stressed the need for additional lawyers to effectively handle the workload and suggested that experienced legal professionals, including retired prosecutors, be engaged on a contract or pro bono basis to strengthen the department. He noted that the Attorney General’s Department is already overstretched with various criminal cases beyond the ORAL initiative and emphasized that boosting staffing levels is critical to achieving the programme’s objectives within a reasonable timeframe.
