Wontumi’s lawyer withdraws from galamsey case, hints at external interference: ‘This may reach the Bar Association.’

Counsel for Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, Andy Appiah-Kubi, has withdrawn from one of the criminal cases involving his client, citing concerns about the proceedings. Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen on June 11, Appiah-Kubi said he had informed both his client and the High Court in Accra of his decision to step aside from the Samreboi illegal mining case, one of three criminal cases facing Chairman Wontumi. The lawyer questioned aspects of the judicial process, including what he described as the court’s insistence on his personal appearance despite prior notice of scheduling conflicts, and suggested that external factors may be influencing the case. While he did not provide detailed allegations, he indicated that the matter could attract the attention of the Ghana Bar Association if a formal petition is filed. The withdrawal comes amid ongoing legal proceedings against Chairman Wontumi, who is also facing another illegal mining-related case and allegations of defrauding the Ghana Export-Import Bank (GEXIM).
