Pan-African Parliament in the dark? Annoh-Dompreh demands transparency on arrears before ‘last-minute shocks’ undermine trust.
Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has called for greater transparency and clarity on arrears in the Pan-African Parliament warning that last-minute disclosures could undermine confidence in the proceedings. In an extraordinary session in Johannesburg, he called on members to rely on institutional memory, acknowledging the contributions of leaders such as Fortune Charumbira and Roger Nkodo Dang, while reflecting on the body’s difficult past. Legal advice had clarified key issues, he said, but warned that the fundamental provisions should be interpreted carefully, and called on the five caucuses to find a political compromise that might allow them to present a consensus candidate to ease tensions. Annoh-Dompreh, however, was concerned about the way financial obligations were being handled and asked how members were being told about arrears and cautioned against making such disclosures at critical processes. He called for full transparency so that all delegations work on a “clean sheet” and appealed for unity, restraint and cooperation in order to preserve the credibility of both the Parliament and the African Union.
