GJA warns: ‘False news’ law is chilling Ghana’s press, journalists now fear every report, says Dwumfour.
The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has raised concerns about the application of the “false news” provisions under the Electronic Communications Act against journalists. Mr Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, President of the GJA, noted that the growing reliance on such laws could intimidate media practitioners and erode constitutional protections for freedom of expression. He referenced cases in which journalists had been invited by the police and charged under the Electronic Communications Act over alleged false publications, cautioning that such actions could foster fear and encourage self-censorship within the media environment. Mr Dwumfour made these remarks at the Second World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) Honours Night, held in Accra on Saturday.
