National Cathedral Site Handed Back to Government Pending Audit Review

Mahama Ayariga, Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, says the site of the National Cathedral has been handed back to the government as the Attorney-General reviews a forensic audit into spending on the project. Mr Ayariga said the contractor had been directed to hand over the site to his ministry, which will hold it until the government decides on the way forward based on the Attorney-General’s advice. Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, October 5, 2026, he said the Attorney-General’s review would focus on expenditure related to the initial plans for the construction of the National Cathedral under the previous administration. “Given that the National Cathedral is a property of the Government of Ghana, I’ve also directed the contractor to hand over the site to the Minister of Local Government and Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, awaiting Federal government directive,” he said.

The handover comes after the government decided not to commit further public funds to the construction and dissolved the National Cathedral Board of Trustees. Mr Ayariga said he had formally notified the board members of the decision, explaining that there was no longer a need for the board since the government would not continue funding the project. He said the government would determine what happens to the site after the Attorney-General completes the review of the forensic audit. “But for now, the Board of Trustees stands dissolved, and the site reverts to the Ministry of Local Government,” he said.
